Worked Examples & Regime Comparison
Understand how tax liabilities compare between Old and New Tax Regimes under the Finance Acts.
Why the New Regime Saves More for Moderate Deductions
For an individual earning ₹12,50,000 with standard deductions and ₹1,50,000 u/s 80C:
- New Regime: Standard deduction is ₹75,000 (Finance (No. 2) Act, 2024), lowering taxable income to ₹11,75,000. With progressive 5%-15% slabs, tax liability is ₹80,600 (including 4% cess).
- Old Regime: Standard deduction is ₹50,000 and 80C deduction is ₹1,50,000, leaving ₹10,50,000 taxable. Tax at 20% and 30% slabs results in ₹1,32,600.
- Net Tax Savings: ₹52,000 saved under the New Tax Regime.
When the Old Regime May Still Be Beneficial
For a taxpayer with substantial Chapter VI-A deductions and self-occupied housing loan interest:
- Home Loan Interest: Up to ₹2,00,000 interest deduction u/s 24(b) is only allowable in the Old Regime.
- Deduction Bundle: ₹1.5L (80C) + ₹50k (80CCD 1B) + ₹50k (80D) + ₹2L (24b) = ₹4,50,000 total deductions.
- Break-even Point: If your total allowable deductions in the Old Regime exceed ₹4.25 Lakhs (at higher income brackets), the Old Regime may yield a lower tax liability. Use this generator to calculate your exact breakeven.
